about

First of all Prince Akeem… issa mixtape, playlist, a jam session if I had to give it a label. I literally recorded most of these songs in my sh***y little bedroom in 3rd Ward within the 2-3 weeks I decided to pack my life up and move to California. It had been on my mind to do so for a few years but I had finally grown the nuts to do it after my grandfather had passed last summer. I was in a bad place mentally, (in which I will elaborate on my “Scott St.” album), so I decided I needed to force change in my life. Literally a leap of faith, I took my little savings and bought a month of Airbnb in south central LA and jumped ship. I treaded water for a little bit and would eventually land in Hollywood of all places. Once I was able to set my studio back up, I organized most of my demos into different playlists and I deem this one Prince Akeem. I love watching movies and always find myself picking up quotes and concepts from dialogue and characters. At the time, just like Eddie Murphy in the 90’s classic Coming to America, I felt at home [Houston, TX] I was just going through the motions. Everything was great but I was in dire need of something different. I came to Los Angeles seeking new life experiences, opportunities, knowledge, and perspectives as well as to hopefully find a cool little LA chick to call my own. Akeem, with his regal charm, managed to pull Lisa working as a charismatic janitor at a fictitious rip off of McDonald’s. Though technically a fairy tale, he does set a real life example of not letting your situation for the time being define who you are and shows with persistence how you can create your own opportunities to reach your goals. Plus….. I wanted to draw myself as Prince Akeem. Stay blessed, enjoy and tell a friend!
“I’m coming in this b**** like Prince Akeem, in foreign land to come and find my queen, just making sure to not reveal my scheme now…” Prince Akeem (Far Away)
